Importers and exporters alike are aware of how the COVID-19 pandemic has turned the freight industries on their heads. But with increasing availability of vaccinations and decreasing case numbers, overseas travel is looking like a possibility for 2022. This means things may be looking up for the air freight industry, with commercial flights making that much needed cargo space available again.
The main contributing factor for the decrease in available air freight cargo space is the rapid decline- and now lack of international and domestic flights across the globe. Passenger planes carry a large percentage of the world’s air cargo, and with travel restrictions globally the demand for air travel continues to be very low. We’ve seen several passenger planes undergo conversions to freighters to replace lost capacity, however demand remains higher than airlines can provide. Despite this, the IATA predicts a 25% rise in freight tonne kilometres this year.
However, with the Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announcing that international travel for fully vaccinated individuals will resume from November 2021, there is hope that in 2022 borders may re-open to international travellers across the globe. This will bring passenger aircraft back off the ground, and hopefully make air freight cargo space more available, and affordable.
